3.1.5 Soybeans
Soybean refers to all varieties of soybean harvested within a calendar year, for whatever purpose (as foodstuff like vegetable oil, soy sauce, tofu, etc., or as animal feed mix.
3.1.6 Coverage of Commodities
The Workshop reiterated the agreement that the AFSIS database would initially consider only these five commodities but more commodities might be added in the future.
3.1.7 Harvested Area (FAO Definition) refers to the area from which a crop is gathered. Area harvested, therefore, excludes the area from which, although sown or planted, there was no harvest due to damage, failure, etc. It is usually net for temporary crops and gross for permanent crops. Net area differs from gross area insofar as the latter includes uncultivated patches, footpaths, ditches, headlands, shoulders, shelterbelts, etc.
If the crop under consideration is harvested more than once during the year as a consequence of successive cropping (i.e., the same crop is sown or panted more than once in the same field during the year), the area is counted as many times as harvested. On the contrary, area harvested will be recorded only once in the case of successive gathering of the crop during the year from the same standing crops. Area harvested is recorded in hectares (HA).
Since planted area and harvested area are expected to be similar unless the damaged area is quite significant, countries without data on harvested area may report only the planted area, in which case the yield would be obtained by dividing the production with planted area. (Workshop agreement)
3.1.8 Planted area means the size of land on which crops are grown. Since land is frequently sown two or more times a year, planted area is potentially larger than cultivated area. However, the planted area would be considered as follows:
1. Area cultivating rice more than once within a certain period would be added up again,
2. Crop area suffered from disaster,
3. Seedbed area on which another crop is planted after the seedlings have been removed. Following categories are excluded:
