The Meeting of the Directors-General of Agricultural Statistics and Information in ASEAN+3 Countries
The Meeting was held during 24 - 26 January, 2005 in Yangon. It was organized by the Project Management in collaboration with the Government of the Union of Myanmar, back-to-back with the Third Focal Point Meeting of the AFSIS Project. The Meeting was attended by senior officials from statistical organizations for food and agricultural Statistics of ASEAN + 3 countries and Focal Points of the AFSIS Project. Representatives from the ASEAN Secretariat, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and East Asia Emergency Rice Reserve (EAERR) Pilot Project were also present. The Meeting was aimed to exchange information regarding the information systems of the respective ASEAN + 3 countries and to provide guidance for the implementation of the AFSIS Project. The agreement derived from the meeting can be summarized as follows:
a) to keep the scope of coverage to the 5 commodities ( rice, maize, soybean, sugar
cane and cassava ) until such time the information is considered complete and to broaden the dimensions of the data;
b) to focus on short-term training courses on specific subjects where newly acquired
skills can be immediately applied at the work place;
c) to strengthen collaboration between AFSIS and EAERR Projects;
d) to use the FAO Food Balance Sheet as a framework to improve the AFSIS databases.
The Third Focal Point Meeting
The Meeting was held during 27 - 28 January, 2005 in Yangon. The Meeting took note of the Project Implementation and financial report of year 2004 and agreed on the proposed budget allocation and work plan for year 2005. The meeting was also informed of the training courses related to agricultural statistics and information technology to be organized by the People’s Republic of China and Republic of Korea in August and October 2005, respectively.
